Free Shopify Product Photo Audit

Drop in your Shopify product photo and find out if it would look at home in a polished DTC store. The audit grades against general professional standards and tells you what to fix before you publish.

On Shopify, your photos are competing with every other DTC store, not with marketplace listings. The quality bar is higher and the consistency bar is higher. A weak product photo undermines the rest of your brand.

Frequently asked questions

Questions we hear from Shopify sellers about product photos. If yours is not covered, let us know.

Does Shopify enforce any photo rules?

No. Unlike Amazon, Shopify does not enforce platform-wide photo rules. Your store, your rules. That means the bar is your own brand standard and your competition. The audit grades against general DTC quality expectations: clean, professional, on-brand, and consistent with what a polished Shopify store would publish.

What makes a photo work on a Shopify store?

Three things. Consistency across the catalog (all your photos look like they belong together). Brand fit (the styling matches your brand voice). Conversion-readiness (clear product visibility, fits the layout you use on PDPs and collection pages). The audit grades each of those and flags inconsistencies.

Should I use a white background or lifestyle for Shopify?

Most Shopify stores use a hybrid: first image is product-focused (often white or neutral background), then 3-5 lifestyle or detail shots. The audit grades your photo against general professional standards so it works for either slot. If your photo is meant to be the hero, focus on clarity. If it is meant to be lifestyle, focus on context and styling.

How does this compare to Shopify Magic image tools?

Shopify Magic generates and edits images. This audit grades the photos you already have. The two are complementary. Use the audit to find what is wrong, then use editing tools (or Outfit Studio for a full re-shoot) to fix it.

My theme requires square images. Does the audit account for that?

The audit grades the photo itself, not the cropped output your theme renders. If your photo would crop weirdly into a square (subject off-center, important details near the edges), the composition score will reflect that. For the actual resizing and padding, use Outfit Image Resizer after the audit.

What about photos for collections and category pages?

Collection thumbnails get scored the same way as product photos. The audit assumes a general DTC quality standard. If you want a photo specifically for a collection cover, lean toward lifestyle or mood-driven shots and the audit will grade against that expectation when it detects the styling.

Can the audit tell me if my photo is on-brand?

Not directly. Brand consistency is subjective and requires comparing your photo to the rest of your catalog. The audit grades against universal quality standards (lighting, composition, sharpness). For brand consistency, look at the audit alongside your existing best photos and ask if it feels like it belongs.

What scores well on Shopify?

Professional lighting, clean focus on the product, consistent styling that matches your brand, no obvious phone-snapshot tells (weird color casts, distracting backgrounds, low resolution). The benchmark description in your result tells you what a top-decile Shopify photo looks like for your product.
